Nearly every consulting firm today has some form of “AI policy.” Most are internal guidelines built around good intentions. They can be useful, but they are often easy to overlook and have no authority beyond the organization itself. IMC USA’s Code of Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence for Management Consultants takes a different approach. It establishes an enforceable, profession-wide standard connected to the Certified Management Consultant® (CMC®) designation. That distinction, enforceable versus aspirational, is precisely why consultants should take it seriously.

Enforceability Is What Makes a Promise Credible

Any consultant can say they use AI responsibly. But without a recognized standard and meaningful consequences, clients have little way to evaluate that claim. Because the AI Code is grounded in IMC USA’s enforceable Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct, serious violations can result in formal sanctions, including suspension or withdrawal of the CMC® designation.

Adopting an enforceable code means more than promising to do quality work. It means agreeing to be accountable to professional standards beyond your own firm. It provides consultants with a clear framework for using AI responsibly: review AI-generated content, verify facts and citations, protect confidential information, and disclose significant uses of AI when appropriate.

If a client questions how an AI-assisted deliverable was developed, you can point to a recognized professional standard that guided your work. In a market increasingly filled with polished, AI-generated reports that may never have been properly reviewed, consultants who follow an enforceable standard can distinguish themselves as a more careful and credible choice. That is a real competitive advantage.

The Profession’s Reputation Is Shared, and So Is the Responsibility

We have all seen the consequences of careless AI use: fabricated citations, nonexistent sources, and recommendations based on information that was never verified. Every one of these failures can weaken confidence in professional consulting, not just the firm responsible for the mistake.

Voluntary internal policies provide limited protection against those outliers. A shared, enforceable professional code creates a higher standard for everyone. By adopting it, consultants help raise the bar across the profession and demonstrate that responsible AI use is not an optional add-on. It is part of what it means to practice serious, professional consulting.
